What this page is
This page quotes r/DogAdvice's rules as ThreadFox read them on 2026-10-05. The quoted text is the community's; the verdict above is our reading of it. Conditions often decide whether a post fits (a required thread, flair, posting day, account age or karma), and r/DogAdvice's current rules on Reddit always win over this page.
Free, for a specific product: a researched Reddit plan by email (communities whose rules fit your post, quoted and dated), or ThreadFox Lite, read-only tools an AI assistant can use to read a community's current rules itself, through your own Chrome (Claude Code: claude mcp add threadfox-lite -- uvx threadfox-lite). For an assistant that also writes and posts within each community's rules, the ThreadFox kit is $49 once.

What its rules say about promotion
No self-promotion or advertising
Promotional content to attract clients, gain exposure, or conduct market research is prohibited. This includes advertising or linking to your business, website, blog, products, professional services, social media, etc. Such content is welcome from unaffiliated individuals when offered in the spirit of support, rather than publicity. Buying, selling, adopting, or re-homing puppies through the sub is prohibited. Surveys require mod approval.
No falsification of service dogs or support animals
Posts or comments promoting or endorsing misrepresentation of a pet dog as a service dog, service dog in training, or emotional support animal are prohibited. Promotion of scam registration sites for this purpose is also prohibited.
No promoting of raw/homemade diets
Alternative diets are nutritionally unbalanced unless formulated by a board certified veterinary nutritionist.
All 15 rules of r/DogAdvice
- No dominance theory or use of aversives
Recommending, instructing or detailing the use of dominance theory or aversives is prohibited, except in contexts where the user is explaining why these approaches are harmful and inappropriate. Methods covered under this rule include, but are not limited to: the use of pain, fear, startling, intimidation or physical punishment; shock/prong/pinch/spray/vibrate/ultrasonic tools; alpha rolls, scruffing, tongue presses, bops on the nose, etc. - Be polite and on-topic
Post or comments that are clearly off-topic, trolling, or disrespectful will be removed and the user may be banned depending on the content. This includes, but is not limited to, personal attacks, breedist remarks, anti-breeder sentiments, novelty accounts, and excessively vulgar content. Any evidence of brigading will result in an immediate permanent ban. - No self-promotion or advertising
- No requests for financial assistance
Posts or comments asking for monetary assistance are prohibited. This includes links to gofundme pages, paypal, etc. It is likewise forbidden to offer assistance, or respond to offers of assistance. The moderation team has no way to prevent scam requests or scam offers that are intended to steal personal information or money. - Do not solicit private messages
Please do not solicit private messages. Rerouting requests for help to a private setting kills discussion and brings nothing of value to the community at large. It also prevents the mod team from screening for dangerous or harmful training techniques. If you have advice to give, please share it publicly so that others may benefit and so the mod team can see that you are acting in good faith. - No falsification of service dogs or support animals
Posts or comments promoting or endorsing misrepresentation of a pet dog as a service dog, service dog in training, or emotional support animal are prohibited. Promotion of scam registration sites for this purpose is also prohibited. - No illegal, unethical, or dangerous advice
Post or comments that endorse violence, abuse, theft, trespassing, or otherwise intentionally breaking/circumventing laws or regulations (regardless of intent) are prohibited. In addition, any unethical or dangerous advice will be removed per moderator discretion. This includes AI/LLM's. - No misinformation on pet food.
There are several common misconceptions about pet food that should not be posted to this sub and may be removed at the mods' discretion. - No promoting of raw/homemade diets
Alternative diets are nutritionally unbalanced unless formulated by a board certified veterinary nutritionist. - CBD Products
Do not recommend CBD/THC products. There is no direct evidence for any use of cannabis in dogs, though there is clear evidence for the toxicity of marijuana. Veterinary cannabis products are unregulated, and most have not been tested for safety or quality control, much less clinical benefits. Until further research is available, use of cannabis in dogs and cats is entirely experimental and based only on anecdote, and it is illegal in many locales for veterinarians to recommend these products. - Please mark images/videos NSFW as appropriate
When posting images of injuries, poop, anything graphic, etc... please use the NSFW flag (Not Safe For Work). - No breed guessing posts
This is not a breed guessing sub. Please post breed identification requests to r/IDmydog, r/dogbreed, or r/WhatBreedIsMyDog. - Need a Reason for Vet Advice
If you are advising somebody should go see a veterinarian, you **MUST** provide a reasonable, articulable, medical reason **why** you think so. If you don't state a reason, your reason doesn't make sense, or at the discretion of a moderator, your comment will be removed. - No Name My Dog Posts
Please post to r/NameMyDog instead - Posts must ask for advice
Posts must ask for advice. There are other subs for showing off your dogs. The exception is update posts.
What the written rules don't show
- Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
- Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
- The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.
Let your AI read the rules before it posts.
