- its rules on Reddit
LegalAdviceUK exists to provide help for those in need of legal support in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We operate as a form of "legal triage" where commenters can guide posters towards resolving issues themselves or towards an appropriate professional.
What its rules say about promotion
Trolling or disruptive users, comments and threads
Moderators reserve the right to decide what is and is not ‘trolling’. If we believe posters or commenters are here with the intention to disrupt the community, we will issue permanent bans. LAUK is not the place to discuss or promote your political, religious, moral or other beliefs to users. This is an inclusive community, where misogyny, bigotry, racism, LGBT-phobia or any other hate speech is *not welcome*. Users who breach this principle will be considered disruptive and banned.
Referrals, firms and organisations
We welcome firms and organisations asking questions and replying to users, but please do not link to, solicit business for or recommend any business(es) or any paid service(s). We also can't accept posts asking for recommendations of or opinions about specific law firms. Charities and other non-profit organisations are acceptable to advise OPs to contact as long as they are able to directly offer help and support to the OP.
What its rules say about AI and bots
Do not post or recommend AI-generated advice
Chatbots & AI are not search engines and their function is not to perform research, give advice or draft letters. Using them for these purposes can result in statements about the law which may seem to make sense, but are in fact wildly incorrect. There are lots of high-profile cases where AI was used to draft legal documents and failed miserably. As a result, on this sub, you may not use or endorse generative AI to respond to legal problems. You may use generative AI to help draft questions.
All 14 rules of r/LegalAdviceUK
- Legal questions and advice from the UK only
Questions and answers must relate to English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish law. Unfortunately, questions or answers regarding the law in other countries or territories will be removed. This includes questions relating to the law in Ireland (Éire), the IoM, the Channel Islands, British Overseas Territories, former British colonies, and any other country or territory. - Replies must be on-topic, helpful and legal
Comments should mainly be **relevant, helpful** ***legal*** **advice** that makes a good faith effort to answer our posters' questions. Comments that are off-topic, low-effort, do not principally consist of legal advice or that have no relation to the original post may be removed. [See more here about why we have this rule.](https://bit.ly/3e4o6H3) Threads with no clear legal question will be removed. Moderators have absolute discretion on what will be removed. - Be polite, civil and keep replies constructive
Speak other posters the same way you would want to be spoken to in real life. This means being respectful when you post a comment, even if you disagree with what is being said. Arguing in bad faith, being aggressive or insulting other posters will result in a temporary or permanent ban. - Trolling or disruptive users, comments and threads
- Don't report bad, incorrect or inaccurate advice
Moderators may have no idea what the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer is and cannot verify or qualify every piece of advice given as being accurate. We won’t remove comments because you disagree with what they are saying unless they break our other rules. If you believe another post has given "bad" advice, or you disagree with their answer, reply and explain your position. Use sources to back up your argument where possible. Remember that the Report button is not a "super disagree" button. - Do not approach, or ask users to approach you, via PM
Do not ask for advice via PM. Do not offer advice via PM. Do not invite people to PM you. Do not discuss anything via PM in any circumstance. LAUK does not verify the accuracy of legal advice being given, but the community will try to fact-check answers. This process of validation cannot take place in a PM and risks legal issues for OPs and commenters; all discussion should take place within the public forum for everyone's protection and rule breakers will be banned without exception. - Referrals, firms and organisations
- Don't ask or advise how to get away with breaking the law
Do not advise other users to commit criminal offences. Do not advise other users how best to get away with criminal offences. Do not ask how to commit or get away with criminal offences. Breaking this rule may be a criminal offence in itself and intentionally asking/advising will result in a ban. - Do not advise people to contact the media
Going to the media can often prejudice a case and should be carefully considered by a legal professional beforehand. [Read fuller explanation as to why we have this rule here](https://www.reddit.com/r/LegalAdviceUK/wiki/faq_subreddit#wiki_should_i_speak_to_the_media.3F). - No immigration, visa, or citizenship questions
Do not ask or provide immigration advice. You can [read what is covered under this rule here](https://www.reddit.com/r/LegalAdviceUK/wiki/faq_subreddit#wiki_why_can.27t_i_ask_questions_about_immigration.2C_citizenship.2C_or_other_related_topics.3F). The moderation team may remove any post or comment at their discretion, even if a comment doesn't violate any other rule, in order to maintain the quality, cohesion, and/or order of the subreddit. If you believe you were banned in error or would like to appeal your ban, please contact us through the Modmail. - Don't worry about incorrect flairs
Flairs are assigned automatically based on keywords in a post - sometimes automod gets this wrong because of the complicated nature that posts can contain. If a post if flaired incorrectly, don't worry, it has no notable impact on the advice you receive. If you want to report the post as an incorrect flair, you can, but it will be corrected ASAP anyway. You can also change it yourself. - Do not post or recommend AI-generated advice
Chatbots & AI are not search engines and their function is not to perform research, give advice or draft letters. There is no need to post personally-identifiable information about you, or anyone else involved in your question. Take particular care not to include personally-identifiable information in screenshots.
What the written rules don't show
- Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
- Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
- The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.
Let your AI read the rules before it posts.
