All posts and comments must clearly and directly support mental health and wellbeing for the community or for the person posting. Do not post suicide or self-harm plans, or provide details of suicide or self-harm ideation. This rule explicitly prohibits "sound-off", "does anybody else", and posts offering vague or general unsolicited advice. Moderator discretion on this rule is final.

Do not offer, promote, advertise, solicit, or recommend a product, app, service, youtube, tiktok, insta, blog, or website. Do not promote your app or project (or anything else) that you have made, are making, or want to make. This rule applies even if your thing is free. It will be removed and you may be banned. Affiliate links and spam promotion is subject to a permanent ban. All other promotions and recommendations are subject to moderator approval. Moderator discretion is final.

  1. Be respectful and supportive
    All posts and comments on r/mentalhealth must be respectful and supportive. Do not insult, provoke, harass, or act disrespectfully; racist, discriminatory, or otherwise unsavory language is also not tolerated. Please ensure the comment you are leaving supports the person you are responding to and does not discourage or harm them.   2. Promote Mental Health

  3. r/MentalHealth is not a crisis support community.
    Content that indicates a user may be experiencing a crisis will be removed and the user will be directed to more appropriate resources.
  4. r/MentalHealth is not a substitute for qualified care.
    Do not request or offer diagnoses, diagnosis tips, recommend medications, dosages, or specific therapies. This rule also prohibits asking if a pattern of behavior, symptoms, or experiences fits a classification of any kind. All such questions should be directed to a qualified and accountable professional.
  5. Do not post NSFW content or details of Abuse, Self-Harm, or Suicide.
    Please ensure that posts and comments on r/mentalhealth are reasonably appropriate for anyone 13 or older. We specifically prohibit posts and comments that provide too much detail about things like violence, gore, abuse, self-harm, self-injury, drug abuse, overdoses, sex, or illegal activity.
  6. Stay on topic
    Please stay on topic. All posts and comments on r/mentalhealth should clearly and directly relate to mental health and how to improve and support mental health for the OP or the community. Off-topic content will be removed.
  7. Be wary of invitations to communicate elsewhere.
    Users who participate in r/mentalhealth often receive invitations or requests to communicate privately or on other platforms. All internet use involves risks. You are responsible to ensure your own safety online. Moderators cannot see your DMs or conversations outside the subreddit and we are therefore unable to help resolve any concerns that may arise in those spaces. Do not post spammy or scammy invitations to DM or communicate outside r/mentalhealth. Be careful and protect yourself.

    We do not allow research recruitment, data collection, or survey posts. This includes requests for feedback or input on projects of any kind.
  10. Use medication only as directed
    Prescription medication should be taken as directed by your doctor or prescriber. Supplements and over-the-counter medications should be taken as directed on the label. Do not ask for or give advice about medications, dosages, or side effects. These questions should be directed to qualified professionals. Do not ask for or offer tips for how to obtain drugs of any kind. Discussion of illicit drugs is prohibited, even if it is legal where you live.

  12. Follow our format requirements
    Posts and comments should be written in English. Non-English content may be removed at moderator discretion even if it otherwise conforms to the rules. Posts must use proper sentence structure, punctuation, and paragraph breaks. Do not post a wall-of-text or multi-part posts or comments. Moderators will remove your post or comment if they can not easily understand what you are trying to say.
  13. Report rule violations to the moderators
    Please do not engage with posts or comments that violate the rules. If a rule violation has been missed by the automation or was overlooked by the moderators, please use the report button or [send us a link via modmail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=r/mentalhealth) so that moderators can address the problem. Responding aggressively or combatively to rule violations is itself a violation of the rule 1, and may result in removal of your content and/or a ban at moderator discretion.

What the written rules don't show

  • Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
  • Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
  • The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.
