What this page is

This page quotes r/PhD's rules as ThreadFox read them on 2026-10-12. The quoted text is the community's; the verdict above is our reading of it. Conditions often decide whether a post fits (a required thread, flair, posting day, account age or karma), and r/PhD's current rules on Reddit always win over this page.

Free, for a specific product: a researched Reddit plan by email (communities whose rules fit your post, quoted and dated), or ThreadFox Lite, read-only tools an AI assistant can use to read a community's current rules itself, through your own Chrome (Claude Code: claude mcp add threadfox-lite -- uvx threadfox-lite). For an assistant that also writes and posts within each community's rules, the ThreadFox kit is $49 once.

Want to post here? Get ThreadFox ($49): your AI (Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex) reads a community's current rules, writes one post that fits and posts once from your own Chrome. No Claude? We'll post for you ($49 per 30-day campaign). Free: a Reddit launch plan for your product, ThreadFox Lite or the posting checklist by email.

The goal of this community is to support PhD seekers and holders globally, fostering a thoughtful space for shared experiences, challenges, and growth. We aim to create a space for those navigating the journey of a PhD, offering support and insight from those who have been through it

What its rules say about promotion

No spam, self-promotion, unsolicited surveys, or research/collaboration recruitment
This includes calls to participate in research surveys or collaborations, or to recruit for research positions. Offering services or products via DM is also not allowed. Due to the overwhelming volume of these posts, violations of this rule will result in a ban. Polls are allowed but low-effort or repetitive ones will be removed.
Tool Sharing Policy
If you have an opensource repo of a tool you built and want to share, you are welcome to share that. If you want to recommend a trusted indie software, you may do that. If you want to talk about an industry standard corporate tool, that is cool. Intransparent startup tools are not allowed. Neither is product validation, validation interviews, requirements gathering, etc. Violations result in permaban. https://www.reddit.com/r/PhD/comments/1r11qx4/policy_on_tools_and_promotions/
All 10 rules of r/PhD
  1. All content must abide by Reddit's content policy.
    For more information: https://www.redditinc.com/policies/content-policy
  2. All content must apply to the PhD experience
All posts should be on topic and relevant to the PhD experience.
  4. Tool Sharing Policy
If you have an opensource repo of a tool you built and want to share, you are welcome to share that. If you want to recommend a trusted indie software, you may do that. 5. (Almost) No admissions questions
Almost all admissions posts will be removed. We recommend r/gradadmissions or r/PhDadmissions for these types of questions. For questions about whether a PhD is worth it, we recommend r/askacademia. Rare exceptions for more nuanced questions about the admissions process are possible.
  6. No requests for academic papers or datasets
Requests for academic papers or datasets will be removed (there are better subs for finding these). Please use your institution’s library resources or contact the authors directly.
  7. No low-effort posts
This sub is for PhD level researchers, and all posts should reflect that. A sufficient level of background and self-research is expected before posting.
  8. Don’t be a jerk
Posts and comments should be constructive and considerate. Serious violations of this rule such as threats of violence or hate speech will result in bans.
  9. Solidarity
No belittling the value of other people’s research. We’re all in this together.
  10. Serious Mental Health Concerns
We empathize with those struggling with mental health issues, but we as a community generally are not qualified to provide professional help when professional help is needed. Therefore, posts related to self-harm or serious mental health concerns will be removed or locked.

What the written rules don't show

  • Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
  • Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
  • The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.

Let your AI read the rules before it posts.

ThreadFox reads a community's current rules, writes a post that fits them, posts once with Reddit's Brand affiliate tag and checks it stayed up. The free ThreadFox Lite reads rules too.
