What its rules say about promotion
No Spam/Repost/Business-reviews
Don't submit a link that has already been posted during the past month - add your thoughts as a comment on the existing thread instead. Repeated posting, especially self-promotional, will be treated as spam. Search r/srilanka for the earlier posts. Equally, business reviews of companies which aren't known island-wide or at least city-wide will be removed. Business reviews belong on sites dedicated for that: Google Maps, TripAdvisor, etc.
No buying, selling, advertising or solicitation
This subreddit is not a marketplace. Do not post to sell products, advertise services, solicit donations, post job listings, seek pet adoptions, post event flyers, seek partners, and so on. Accounts that exist primarily to push a particular product or service will be removed at moderator discretion, even where individual posts don't violate other rules. This is to prevent marketers from flooding this subreddit. If you're unsure whether your post qualifies, tag a moderator.
All 14 rules of r/srilanka
- Posts must be related to Sri Lanka
All submissions must have a clear and meaningful connection to Sri Lanka. We try to keep this broad - connections can be people, politics, culture, history, geography, economy, or current events. Posts that are only tangentially related or off-topic will be removed at moderator discretion. Note a Sri Lankan person in the news for doing something abroad, or posts targeted at Sri Lankans abroad do not generally meet the bar unless they are otherwise notable and their actions relate to the country - Posts must be in English
This is the English-language subreddit. Titles and post bodies must be in English. Transliterations will also be removed. Sinhala and Tamil text content is fine if you've also provided an English translation. Media content such as music or videos is exempt from this rule, but the post title must still be in English. - Don't be a jerk
Disagree with ideas, not people. Insults, slurs, targeted harassment, and trolling - posting in bad faith to bait, provoke, derail, or waste the community's time - will result in removal and potentially a ban. Good faith is expected of all members. If someone breaks this rule against you, report the comment rather than retaliating. "They started it" is not a defense. Similarly, brigading people to action (report, spam) another sub or group is not permitted and will get you banned. - Titles and Links
Any linked content must have an accompanying text in the body of the post, so our users have enough context to understand what it's about without needing to click through. An exception is made for links to reputed news-sources if the title and image automatically pulled from the linked post accurately describes the post. Posts with ALL CAPS titles will be removed. Make sure your title actually reflects the content of your post. Posts with misleading titles will be removed. - No low-effort posts or vague questions, or any type of personals.
Posts must include enough context for a useful reply. Questions about life, career, or travel planning with no background information will be removed For travel in particular, check sources like Wikitravel and Tripadvisor for common routes before posting. Open-ended requests such as "plan my two weeks in Sri Lanka" will be removed. This is also NOT a dating platform or a sub to find a study partner. This rule also covers posts generated primarily by AI tools. - Controversial, inflammatory and opinion posts
Controversial, inflammatory, or opinion/rant-driven topics must be text posts with a clear invitation for other users to engage, not just a link or image. This applies to memes, screenshots, and graphics on political or divisive topics as well. Posts that are purely venting or ranting with no question or invitation for discussion will be removed. Threads that become toxic or appear designed to inflame rather than discuss may be locked or removed. - No discrimination or hate speech
Content that attributes negative behaviour to a group based on race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or disability status will be removed. There is a difference between discussing these topics and using them to demean people; the former is welcome, the latter is not. We take a zero tolerance policy towards discrimination or hate speech on this subreddit. Obvious cases will result in a permanent ban. - No Spam/Repost/Business-reviews
- No buying, selling, advertising or solicitation
- No surveys, homework, or job outsourcing
Posts asking the community to complete surveys, answer research questions, or do work on your behalf (academic or professional) will be removed. If you're unsure of whether your post is in the clear, tag a moderator. - No doxxing, threats, or incitement of violence
Do not post private or identifying information about any individual — including addresses, phone numbers, workplaces, or social media accounts - without their clear consent. Public figures are an exception. Equally, posts or comments that threaten, glorify, or encourage violence or harassment against any person or institution are not permitted. Both categories carry a zero tolerance policy and will result in a permanent ban. Serious cases may be reported to Reddit and Sri Lankan law enforcement. - No illegal content, sexual content, or sexualisation of minors
Requesting or offering piracy in any form, illegal goods or services, sex work, or sexual content, is not permitted and will result in a permanent ban. The sexualisation of minors, or the normalisation of it, is strictly prohibited. Note that this does not prevent discussion of public cases involving sexual offences against minors. Serious cases, particularly where minors are involved, will be reported to Reddit and Sri Lankan law enforcement authorities. - No ban evasion
If your account has been banned, creating a new account to continue posting may result in that account being banned as well. Reddit flags these accounts automatically - this is not something we control. If you believe a ban was made in error, contact a moderator via modmail. - Use modmail about moderation issues
If you have an issue with moderation, use modmail to contact the moderators, and the mods will get back to you. The response might take upto a day.
What the written rules don't show
- Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
- Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
- The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.
Let your AI read the rules before it posts.
ThreadFox reads a community's current rules, writes a post that fits them, posts once with Reddit's Brand affiliate tag and checks it stayed up. The free ThreadFox Lite reads rules too.
