What this page is
This page quotes r/IndieDevelopers's rules as ThreadFox read them on 2026-10-12. The quoted text is the community's; the verdict above is our reading of it. Conditions often decide whether a post fits (a required thread, flair, posting day, account age or karma), and r/IndieDevelopers's current rules on Reddit always win over this page.

- its rules on Reddit
This is a subreddit for indie developers. Within this subreddit you can share your own games, help or get help from other developers and just be an all-round helpful community. This industry is already difficult as it is.
What its rules say about promotion
2. No Self-Promotion or Advertising
- Self-promotion (including but not limited to game advertisements, blog posts, or social media links) is only allowed in designated threads such as weekly “Devlog” or “Feedback” threads. - Posts solely for the purpose of selling products, soliciting donations, or spamming links will be removed.
All 9 rules of r/IndieDevelopers
- 1. Be Respectful and Professional
- Treat all members with kindness and respect. This is a supportive space for indie developers of all levels. - Harassment, hate speech, or discriminatory language will not be tolerated. - Keep discussions professional, constructive, and relevant to game development. - 2.
- 3. Stay On-Topic
- Posts should be directly related to indie game development. This includes topics like: - Game design, programming, art, sound, etc. - Tools, engines, and resources for indie devs. - Success stories, lessons learned, challenges, and troubleshooting. - Off-topic content (such as general gaming, politics, or unrelated personal content) will be removed. - 4. Use Descriptive Titles
- Titles should clearly describe the content of your post. This helps users understand what they’re clicking and improves engagement. - Avoid clickbait-style titles. - 5. Provide Context and Details
- If you're sharing a project, development update, or seeking feedback, provide a detailed description and relevant context (such as game genre, target platform, etc.). - If you need help, include specifics about the issue you’re facing. The more detail, the better the community can assist. - 6. Respect Other Developers’ Work
- Give credit where credit is due. If you use third-party assets (e.g., art, music, or code), always credit the creators and adhere to licensing agreements. - Don’t steal or plagiarize other developers’ work. - 7. No Duplicate Posts
- Please do a quick search before posting. Duplicate posts (e.g., asking the same question or posting similar content repeatedly) will be removed. - 8. No Piracy or Illegal Content
- Any content related to pirated games, stolen assets, or illegal software will be removed. This subreddit is for legal, ethical game development practices only. - 9. Follow Reddit's Content Policy
- All posts must comply with Reddit's general content policy, including the ban on explicit content, harassment, and other prohibited activities.
What the written rules don't show
- Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
- Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
- The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.
