What this page is

This page quotes r/telescopes's rules as ThreadFox read them on 2026-10-11. The quoted text is the community's; the verdict above is our reading of it. Conditions often decide whether a post fits (a required thread, flair, posting day, account age or karma), and r/telescopes's current rules on Reddit always win over this page.

Free, for a specific product: a researched Reddit plan by email (communities whose rules fit your post, quoted and dated), or ThreadFox Lite, read-only tools an AI assistant can use to read a community's current rules itself, through your own Chrome (Claude Code: claude mcp add threadfox-lite -- uvx threadfox-lite). For an assistant that also writes and posts within each community's rules, the ThreadFox kit is $49 once.

Want to post here? Get ThreadFox ($49): your AI (Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex) reads a community's current rules, writes one post that fits and posts once from your own Chrome. No Claude? We'll post for you ($49 per 30-day campaign). Free: a Reddit launch plan for your product, ThreadFox Lite or the posting checklist by email.

The home to all amateur astronomers & telescopes! Feel free to discuss anything astronomical here, from what sort of telescope you should get, stargazing tips and tricks, to how to use that scope of yours that's been sitting around! Astrophotography is permitted as well, but feel free to check out /r/astrophotography for more of that. If you're looking for your first telescope, please read the stickied post and check out the review/buying guide links in the sidebar before posting.

What its rules say about promotion

Piracy
Any content which encourages, promotes, provides resources etc. for the act of piracy is prohibited. This subreddit is not a place for such illegal activity.
Petitions/surveys/crowdfunders
Links to petitions, surveys, crowdfunders, and other advertisements to sell your own products are prohibited here. There are other subs and communities for this. You can post used item ads here, but do post them on other communities or websites such as Cloudynights, Astromart, etc.
Direct links
Direct links should be accompanied by commentary as a top level comment, and should be a source of discussion. Not providing commentary, or posting content from a single source will be assumed to be attempts of driving traffic, which is not allowed here. Self promotion is only permitted to active members of the community.

What its rules say about AI and bots

AI-generated content
AI-generated content is not permitted on this subreddit. This includes animations of still images of the night sky, for instance. Quality astrophotography takes hard work and dedication - there's no need to invalidate all of that with an AI filter.
All 9 rules of r/telescopes
  1. Piracy
Any content which encourages, promotes, provides resources etc. for the act of piracy is prohibited. This subreddit is not a place for such illegal activity.
  3. Be civil
Non-civil behaviour such as insulting, flaming, etc, will not be tolerated. This sub is a place for everyone to learn and help each other, and such behaviour only does bad things to everyone involved.
  4. Direct links
Direct links should be accompanied by commentary as a top level comment, and should be a source of discussion. Not providing commentary, or posting content from a single source will be assumed to be attempts of driving traffic, which is not allowed here. Self promotion is only permitted to active members of the community.
  5. Images
Astrophotography image titles must include only the target name or catalog number A top-level comment or he body of the post must include acquisition and processing details. This includes all gear as well as processing you did to the image. r/telescopes is a subreddit about learning, and posting image details allows others to learn how these images are taken, what to expect, encourages discussion, and can help others. All images submitted must be taken by you with your own gear.
  6. Titles
Titles should not be 'clickbaity' nor self-deprecating - we're all here to learn so there is no point in calling yourself a 'noob' and/or putting yourself down. Titles should be descriptive about what you're discussing/posting. For images, titles should include the object name and/or catalog number only without any other info or editorializing (“first time”, scope used, etc.). Posts may be removed at a moderator's discretion if it is believed to have an inappropriate title.
  7. Low-effort content
Low effort content includes screenshots/complaints of weather forecasts, purchase receipts, 'shitposts', memes, and general content where minimal effort has been applied. r/telescopes aims to be a high quality sub where users can discuss all things telescopes and astronomy, but allowing such repetitive and low-effort posts will drastically lower the overall quality of the sub. Posts may be removed at a moderator's discretion.
  8. Read our Beginner's Guide
If you're totally new to telescopes and astronomy, please read our [Beginner's Quick Guide to choosing your first telescope](https://www.reddit.com/r/telescopes/comments/z9s352/beginners_quick_guide_to_choosing_your_first/) which is stickied to the top of the subreddit. Failure to read the guide and then posting "which telescope should I buy" will result in your post being removed and being referred to this guide. Astrophotography-specific gear questions should be posted on r/askastrophotography
  9. AI-generated content
AI-generated content is not permitted on this subreddit. This includes animations of still images of the night sky, for instance. Quality astrophotography takes hard work and dedication - there's no need to invalidate all of that with an AI filter.

What the written rules don't show

  • Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
  • Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
  • The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.

Let your AI read the rules before it posts.

ThreadFox reads a community's current rules, writes a post that fits them, posts once with Reddit's Brand affiliate tag and checks it stayed up. The free ThreadFox Lite reads rules too.
