What this page is

This page quotes r/horrorwriters's rules as ThreadFox read them on 2026-10-06. The quoted text is the community's; the verdict above is our reading of it. Conditions often decide whether a post fits (a required thread, flair, posting day, account age or karma), and r/horrorwriters's current rules on Reddit always win over this page.

Free, for a specific product: a researched Reddit plan by email (communities whose rules fit your post, quoted and dated), or ThreadFox Lite, read-only tools an AI assistant can use to read a community's current rules itself, through your own Chrome (Claude Code: claude mcp add threadfox-lite -- uvx threadfox-lite). For an assistant that also writes and posts within each community's rules, the ThreadFox kit is $49 once.

Want to post here? Get ThreadFox ($49): your AI (Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex) reads a community's current rules, writes one post that fits and posts once from your own Chrome. No Claude? We'll post for you ($99 per 30-day campaign). Free: a Reddit launch plan for your product, ThreadFox Lite or the posting checklist by email.

What its rules say about promotion

No Self-promotion
Advertisements for books, podcasts, YouTube channels, any for-pay products or services are NOT allowed and will be removed. Requests for ARC readers do NOT count as 'self-promotion' and are allowed (1 request per person/book; repeat requests for the same book will be removed).

What its rules say about AI and bots

No AI-generated content
This applies to writing AND cover art, as well as 'AI-powered' writing software or platforms.
All 8 rules of r/horrorwriters
  1. No Low Effort Posts
All posts should contribute something to the discussion of horror in literature. No quote posts, no one-liners. No asking others to do your work for you (e.g What would be a good origin story for my character?). And for the love of god, no "yes or no" questions.
  3. Horror Content Only
All content should be related to horror writing, horror literature, or advice and analysis related to those things. Questions and discussions that are not about horror and related genres will be removed. If you need general writing help, please use general subreddits such as r/writing, r/writers, r/keepwriting.
  4. No Spam
I know, you've got a dozen great blog posts to share about writing horror and what it takes to get those horror books published. And I want to read them, I do! But we're a small subreddit. Please limit your posts to a reasonable time and place. Multiple successive link posts will get removed and repeated offenses can lead to a ban.
  5. Mark Explicit Content NSFW
Horror can get graphic. Please tag any stories you post as appropriately. Explicit sex, violence, gore or disturbing situations should be marked NSFW so that readers know when something might be too much for them. Explicit language and "normal" horror content does not need marked.
  6. Know Your Rights
Anything posted publicly online uses first publication rights! You will not be able to use first publication rights for magazine submissions or book rights if you posted the story or parts of it on Reddit. Please be aware that public subreddits, this one included, ARE used for AI training. By posting directly, you DO feed your writing directly into Google AI's training data. When in doubt, ask for private beta readers to be safe!
  7. No Story Submissions, Feedback only
If you post a story or excerpt, it MUST be flaired as 'Feedback' or 'Beta Swap' and indicate what kind of feedback you are looking for in the body text. This is NOT optional. If you just copypaste a story, it will be removed. Feedback requests MUST be submitted as text or link to an external source (Google Docs, other subreddit,...) - NO screenshots. NO first drafts.
  8. No AI-generated content
This applies to writing AND cover art, as well as 'AI-powered' writing software or platforms.

What the written rules don't show

  • Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
  • Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
  • The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.
