What this page is
This page quotes r/shanghai's rules as ThreadFox read them on 2026-10-13. The quoted text is the community's; the verdict above is our reading of it. Conditions often decide whether a post fits (a required thread, flair, posting day, account age or karma), and r/shanghai's current rules on Reddit always win over this page.
Free, for a specific product: a researched Reddit plan by email (communities whose rules fit your post, quoted and dated), or ThreadFox Lite, read-only tools an AI assistant can use to read a community's current rules itself, through your own Chrome (Claude Code: claude mcp add threadfox-lite -- uvx threadfox-lite). For an assistant that also writes and posts within each community's rules, the ThreadFox kit is $49 once.
Want to post here? Get ThreadFox ($49): your AI (Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Codex) reads a community's current rules, writes one post that fits and posts once from your own Chrome. No Claude? What its rules say about promotion
No spam, limited promotions
Many of us write blogs or are involved with business or events in Shanghai. We're happy for you to promote these, but spamming isn't OK. If you're hosting an event, include the date, time, location, and price. To limit clutter, our rule is one promotion per company each month. We are more lenient on accounts that follow the 10:1 rule (10 community posts for every 1 promo). All 7 rules of r/shanghai
- Observe reddiquette and be nice
Reddiquette is described as "an informal expression of the values of many redditors", and pertains to general posting behaviour on the site. To keep this a welcoming and useful place, we do not permit trolling, personal attacks, and toxicity. For a full breakdown of reddiquette, see [here](https://www.reddit.com/wiki/reddiquette). - Tourism related questions go to the Tourism thread
Many Tourist related questions are asked in posts multiple times and answered with the same answers. Please check if your question has been asked or make a comment in the Tourism thread. - Read/search before posting
Please have a look through the [Guidance and Info for Visitors Thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/shanghai/comments/12qxb9q/guidance_and_info_for_visitors/) and [search through older threads](http://www.reddit.com/r/shanghai/search?q=&restrict_sr=on) before posting general questions on /r/shanghai. Questions like "what's good to eat?" and "how is Shanghai like for foreigners" have been asked and there already is relevant information here. - Meet up posts must be descriptive
When asking for Meet ups please include your age range, gender, hobbies and a bit about yourself. Meet up vague posts will be removed. - No spam, limited promotions

No discussion of illegal activities. However, we do not wish to discourage discussion of such matters: for example, if you want to talk about attitudes in Shanghai towards marijuana then that's fine, but when you start asking people on a public forum where you can buy it in Shanghai, that crosses the line. - No low effort posts, must have descriptive title
Posts must contribute meaningfully to the discussion and must have descriptive titles. Avoid one-word posts, vague questions, or content with little substance that puts the burden of thought on other redditors. Make sure your post adds value and encourages engagement.
What the written rules don't show
- Unpublished minimums. Many communities remove posts from new or low-karma accounts through AutoModerator settings that are not on the rules page, often before a moderator sees them.
- Reddit's own filters. Reddit's site-wide spam filters can remove posts from accounts that mostly share links to their own site, in any community.
- The community's norms. Many communities see themselves as peers, not an audience: post where you already take part, and make the post worth reading without the link.
